Chicago Maritime Festival - Feb 23rd

What a great time! Teaching kids in schools for a week, then finishing it all off by being featured at such a great festival!

I got to share the stage with a group of gentlemen who used to fish for menhaden and actually use these songs in their youth. We taught each other songs.

Everyone was great, more than I can get into here. I should start a salty blog.

check it out:

Bay Engineers Dinner for C.A. Thayer
What  a thrill to get to perform at a dinner thanking  the folks  who worked to restore the ship I used to live on at the Maritime museum. They've made her seaworthy!

'SEAFEST 2006'  -SCARBOROUGH (UK)
July 21-23
I got to help out, run a sing, act in a version of the Odyssey, Get a few of my own song sets, and Sing Happy Birthday to Hughie Jones! I wasn't actually on the bill , but I was on the T-shirt! Still, it was a great chance to meet lots of folks I've long enjoyed listening to who are part of the UK's living tradition of singing. I look forward to returning.

SF Maritime Closes for Repairs

San Francisco Maritime will be Closed for at least 3 years for some long overdue construction and rehabilitation. We don't know what direction it or its displays will take upon reopening. All we can say with any certainty is that the gorgeous Art Deco WPA Mural should still be there. We were there to wish her farewell in song -And honored to be asked to do so.

Mystic Sea Music Festival 2006

I have more to say about this year's festival than I have time to write here.  This has (for 27 years now) not only been one of the most impressive gatherings of talent in the (US) Sea Music world, but also one of the most impressive opportunities for education about it. Chanties being used on board historic ships to do the jobs for which they were intended is not found often and certainly not on this scale. It's a shame that interest is waning for this sort of accuracy and historical interpretation. More people interested in this music should really make the pilgrimage to this weekend long event. They should do more to "get the word out" to the young folks (or those not local to New England) who are just getting interested in this disappearing branch of traditional music.
The Biggest news for me personally, was getting to take the stage, both solo and in the "all hands concert " at the end.
I've wanted to be up there for years.
By the way, Don Sinetti is just as loud when heard from behind him.

2006 Chicago Maritime Festival
Saturday, March 11.
Well, It's probably not quite fair to put this here, but I'll be there, and I'm sure singing will be involved. The folks who organize this festival are great, and there'll be a chantey sing the next day, and there's really good Greek food. . .

Not to mention performers of all walks interpreting the world of sea music -especially how it relates to the Great Lakes. Some great folks you won't see elsewhere.

No Greek food this time, but still a lot of personable fun. I was treated well at the Festival, asked to come up on stage to sing at the closing chantey sing. I got to bear witness to a Dutch Chantey Choir, which is truly a sight to behold. Best of all got to stay up late with some of the featured performers drinking a selection of Scotches and Rum from Belize. When we moved onto Tequila, moved to bed.
The chantey sing the next day was friendly and well worth the visit. I hope to see more folks there next year.

Boxing Day
Dec 26th Pelican Inn 3pm
Open a special gift of traditional music; Ancient Harmonies, Carols, and Songs of the Solstice. We'll probably sing some chanties too.

We had a festive time, and people liked it enough that folks were asking to hear the Christmas stuff for the next two months.

Say "Thank you" to yourself with English ale in an English pub &
Sing along with traditional songs. Leave the creepy relative you didn't want to eat with at home.                     4pm, or whenever we start.

-What a great surprise! Some of the swell people had come told me (by way of Griff's sexy wife) that they've started to come by as a  personal  Thanksgiving tradition: Fri = Hike + Pub + Saltywalt! There were folks who dropped by just to see for a little bit, and others who stayed all evening! I know that this doesn't surprise some of you, but it always takes little old me off guard, and makes Jon blush, and Griff smile.
THANKS!
